If you find that you're having trouble coming up with an adequate
list, try looking through cookbooks - especially old cookbooks.
Old cookbooks were typically written for very busy homemakers
on a budget, and many of the recipes are quick to make. Don't
forget about Mom and Dad. Give them a call and ask what you
ate when you were growing up, since you've probably forgotten
some old favorites.

![]() It makes it simple for other family members to pitch in with menu planning and shopping. This also allows you to see what you're really eating. Are you getting a balanced diet? Are you eating deep green, orange and cruciferous vegetables? Citrus fruit? Whole grains and beans? What about fat content - is it hovering around a reasonable 25-30%? With the family menu you can begin to make healthy adjustments to your diet. Begin by listing fifteen or twenty main dishes that you know and love - and are able to cook. Ask your partner and kids to pitch in. This is not a strictly "from-scratch" list, |
so be sure to
include your favorite pre-packaged stuff and everything else
you eat that doesn't come from a restaurant. Add to the list
a variety of vegetables and veggie side dishes you like, then
fruit and fruit dishes (including fruit juice), and other side
dishes and snacks, like muffins.
![]() Add any special breakfast or lunch food that you normally buy, and beverages like milk, coffee, tea, wine and beer. You can add a dessert and sweets section to the list if this is part of your diet. |
