Computers Displacing TVs, Phones In Importance

By David Utter

Lower costs and greater broadband availability have made PCs the centerpiece of everyday life at home.

Take the TV. Take the radio. Take the phone. Not a problem. Touch the computer and there will be a problem. That's the conclusion of a recent Burst! Media survey of 13,000 web users age 14 and up.

86 percent of those surveyed felt that a week without a computer would be a disruption. Over 42 percent characterized that disruption as "significant."

The PC has went from a blocky curiosity to a necessary part of home entertainment. The survey found the PC has become the primary platform for listening to music or playing games among those 24 and younger.

That same age group chooses to watch movies and other video content via the PC at a much greater percentage than any other. Advertisers positively swoon over anything the 18-24 age group does in large numbers, and Burst! Media's president/CEO Jarvis Coffin notes in the report that the trends will have an impact on advertising.

Almost 46 percent of all respondents use the Internet as a primary information source, with a similar percentage noting they get their news online. Men appear to be more likely than women to be online news gatherers, 50.3 to 44.3 percent.
