I've been rolling my eyes at the uproar over fake blogs (or "character blogs," as some are calling them). Now it appears they have a name: flogs. And a wiki has appeared to keep track of them called, creatively, FakeBlogsWiki.

Reconnecting With People Via Blogs

By Robert Scoble

The heck with Google Juice. With traffic. With hype. With all the stuff everyone is writing about blogs.

At its core I find it's a great way to keep in touch with friends and family.

Tonight an email from Gary Wisniewski greeted me. Who's he? Well, 10 years ago I was helping plan the VBITS conference and Gary was the other half of Carl and Gary's VB Site (the first Website for Visual Basic programmers). He's into photography and so was I, so we got a few of our friends together after the conference and did a photo tour of San Francisco. That grew into a yearly event which went on for most of the next decade.

I haven't seen Gary for years, but it's nice to get a note from him and it's great to see (thanks to his blog) he's having a ball down in Australia.

On this topic, Maryam had a high school friend get in touch with her through my blog (they grew up in Iran together).

Do you have stories of people you've reconnected with through blogs or online services?

VoipBuster And Free Phone Calls

By Neville Hobson

My online friend Uri Levanon called me today from Israel. He called to my SkypeIn number.

That's in itself isn't remarkable. What is, perhaps, is that he called that number - which is a normal landline number in London - from his internet phone service. Not Skype this time. Uri was calling from The VoipBuster. For free.

VoipBuster

Another VOIP service to join Skype and Teleo (and probably others).

Is it worth it? Well, I'm going to try it. The sound quality on the call with Uri was almost as good as a Skype call. And, if you really can use it to call normal phones for free, then it's definitely worth a try.

The VoipBuster website lists 15 countries where you can call people there for free on their normal phones (not mobile numbers). For calls to numbers in all other countries, you'd buy credit from the VoipBuster, much as you do now with SkypeOut.

The VoipBuster software is for Windows only at the moment. And it's still beta. Free download.

New Podcast Search Launches...sort Of

By Shel Holtz

On its site and via press release, TVEyes-a company that lets customers search radio and TV recordings by keyword-announced the launch of Podscope, a search engine designed specifically for podcasts.

Podcast Search

The company claims it's the first search engine of its kind, but I'm not sure of the truth of that statement, given the capabilities of search engines like 49Media. Still, Podscope should be useful given the statement that it "makes every word searchable within a podcast, enables the audio indexing of podcast content, which is equally applicable to video blogs and personal videos."

How well does it work? Beats me, since a visit to the Podscope site reveals nothing more than a placeholder page announcing, "We're listening. You're searching. Podscope is coming soon." To announce the service but not have it available for testing is the worst kind of marketing. Reading the news release makes you want to rush right over and try it, not leave your e-mail address to be notified of the real launch. (You can also submit your own podcast to be included in Podscope's searches.)

There's no word on whether the searches will produce time codes for finding content within a podcast or whether the service will be free.
